Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka Takes Top Spot in Women’s World Tennis Rankings

Paris (AFP)

Despite her loss in the final of the US Open Tennis Championship, Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka rose to the top of the women’s world rankings, after the long dominance of Polish Iga Szwiłtek.
Chevyuntek remained at the top of the world rankings for a year and a half, a total of 75 consecutive weeks, specifically since April 4, 2022.
This is the third longest period in the history of women’s tennis, after German Steffi Graf (186 weeks) and Swiss Martina Hingis (80).
Sabalenka, 25 years old, took first place for the first time in her career, after remaining in second place since January 30.
Her ranking in first place comes as compensation for her loss in the “Flushing Meadows” final at the hands of the young American Coco Gauff 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, noting that the latter rose to third place in her best position ever.
There were several changes in the top ten positions, following the end of the “Flushing Meadows” tournament, as American Jessica Pegula, who was eliminated in the round of 16, fell two places, similar to Tunisian Ons Jabeur, who fell to seventh place.
