Belarus will close its borders to foreigners and stateless persons from Sunday

Belarus on Saturday, October 31, announced that it would temporarily close the borders to foreigners and stateless persons from Sunday, explaining it with concerns about the spread of the new coronavirus.

“From 1 November, in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Belarus will temporarily prevent foreign nationals and stateless persons from crossing their borders through land checkpoints, simplified checkpoints, checkpoints at railway stations and river ports,” the Belarusian Border Guard Committee said, adopted by the government on 30 October.

The statement states that the restrictions will not apply to air passengers arriving in Belarus via Minsk airport, as well as persons traveling with diplomatic or service passports, members of official delegations, foreigners providing assistance to Belarus, Russian citizens transiting Belarus, foreigners are the immediate family members of Belarusian citizens or have residence permits.

Belarus reportedly closed its borders with Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine on Thursday, not allowing light and passenger transport and without initially providing any official information, but later explaining it to the epidemiological situation in neighboring countries.

“Due to the epidemiological situation in the neighboring countries, Belarus temporarily restricts the entry of certain categories of natural persons into its territory through land border crossing points from Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine,” the Belarusian State Border Guard Committee said in a statement.

Minsk took these steps at a time when it was the authoritarian leader of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko ordered security leaders to crack down on opposition protests.

According to the Belarusian portal “Tut.by”, meanwhile, it has been receiving news since Friday evening that Belarusian students studying abroad are not allowed into the country. The parents of the young people informed the portal that students are disembarked from passenger buses going from Poland to Belarus without explanation, while other passengers are allowed to continue their journey.
