Belarus Tightening Grip of Russia: Implications for Latvia’s National Security

Since the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, which were accompanied by mass protests and the results of which are not recognized as legitimate by Western countries, this country has come under the tight grip of Russia. Beate Livdanska, a researcher at the Center for Eastern European Policy Studies, notes in the TVNET program “Pulss” that, although there is no official document that Belarus has become a part of Russia, at the moment we must not look at Belarus as a part of Russia.

– What does the influence of this not-so-friendly neighboring country mean for Latvia at the moment?

– This is a nationally important topic for us, because Belarus is right next door to us. After the war started by Russia in Ukraine, Belarus has become a more relevant topic on the political agenda, because Belarus currently, albeit indirectly, supports Russia’s military operations in Ukraine – allowing Russian troops to be on its territory. There are also rumors that Russian nuclear weapons are located there.

Belarus is currently a legitimate threat to Latvia’s national security, as well as security at the international level.
