Minsk –
Armed Forces Belarus started large-scale exercises suddenly in the middle of the Russia vs Ukraine war. What is it?
Reported from ReutersWednesday (4/5/2022), Belarus is a close ally of Russia which invaded Ukraine since the end of February 2022. The military exercise was claimed by Belarus to test their combat readiness.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine was carried out after Russian troops held joint exercises with the military Belarus. The military drills then allowed Russia to move more troops closer to the border with Ukraine. Russia itself has called its actions in Ukraine a ‘special military operation’.
“It is planned that the (combat readiness) test will involve the movement of a large number of military vehicles, which can slow down traffic on public roads,” the Belarusian Ministry of Defense said in a statement.
The Belarusian Defense Ministry said the drills pose no threat to its neighbors or the European community at large.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko speaks with his ally, Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday (3/5). The two discussed Russia’s operations in Ukraine, among other issues, according to the official statement.
The territory of Ukraine adjacent to Belarus, including the capital Kiev, was under Russian attack in the early stages of the invasion. Now, Russia has focused its attacks on eastern and southeastern Ukraine.
