The protest was followed by the police, who tried several times to block and demobilize the protesters, who sported white and red flowers, flags and parasols.
“We are here against violence, we demand the release of political prisoners and, of course, new elections,” said one of the protesters, Polina, a music professional, quoted by the agency Efe.
The crisis in Belarus was triggered after the August 9 elections, which, according to official results, led President Alexander Lukashenko, in power for 26 years, to a sixth term, with 80% of the vote.
The opposition considered the election to be fraudulent and thousands of Belarusians took to the streets across the country to demand Lukashenko’s removal.
The protests have been severely suppressed by security forces, with thousands of people detained and hundreds injured.
