Poland was informed about Belarus’ planned military exercises near the Polish border.
The violation of the airspace border took place in the Białowieża region. The helicopters that violated Polish airspace flew so low that it was difficult for the radar system to detect them. For this reason, the initial report on the morning of August 1 stated that Polish radar systems had not detected any airspace violations.
In response to the incident, Poland has informed NATO and plans to increase the presence of its forces in the border area.
Poland has urgently called the plenipotentiary of the Embassy of Belarus to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
A photo of the helicopters was also published by a local volunteer, Eliza Kowalczyk.
The independent investigators found that the Mi-24 and Mi-8 helicopters entered the territory of Poland at a depth of at least three kilometers, then turned around and flew back to Belarus.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland expressed a strong protest and called on the Belarusian side to provide a detailed explanation of the incident,” the ministry said in a statement.
“The Polish side emphasized that this incident is evaluated as another element in the escalation of tension on the Polish-Belarusian border. Poland expects that Belarus will refrain from such actions,” the ministry said.
