The government is introducing a ban on the import of certain goods across the Belarusian-Lithuanian section of the state border, reports Telegram channel “Government of Belarus”.
The corresponding resolution of the Council of Ministers was signed by Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko on Thursday, March 14.
The introduction of the restrictive measure is a response to Lithuania’s decision to close two checkpoints, Lavorishkes and Raigardas, for goods, transport and people from March 1, 2024.
List of goods prohibited for import
It will not be possible to transport food, clothing, hosiery, household appliances and construction products from the territory of Lithuania to Belarus.
In addition, the list of “prohibited items” includes used clothing and spare parts for vehicles, as well as tires, alcoholic beverages and other goods.
Comment from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
As the press service of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry told Tochka.by, the adoption of the resolution means that the import flow of goods to Belarus will be forced to take alternative routes, bypassing the territory of Lithuania.
This will negatively affect the activities of numerous Lithuanian logistics companies, leading to significant losses due to a decrease in trade turnover.
It is noted that the imposed restrictions do not apply to goods imported into Belarus for personal use.
The Foreign Ministry also emphasized that the actions of the Latvian government to introduce an import embargo on certain Belarusian food products in 2024 will not go unanswered.
Minsk calls on Vilnius and Riga to bring more independence, balance and focus on the true interests of their own people into their policies.
