Belarus has prepared a draft law, which will provide for its punishment “promoting non-traditional relationships”, something that refers to the relationships of people belonging to the LGBTI+ community, as reported today by the Belarusian state news agency Belta.
Belta cites the country’s attorney general Andrei Sved, who in a speech to parliament said that a bill has been prepared, which would impose administrative responsibilities for the promotion of “abnormal relationships, pedophilia and the voluntary denial of procreation”.
As he said, the bill is in the approval process.
A law banning pro-homosexual propaganda has been in place in neighboring Russia since 2013 and has effectively made any public expression of lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender behavior or lifestyle illegal.
Last December, the Supreme Court of Russia banned the “international social movement of LGBTI+” characterizing it as an extremist organization.
Homosexuality was decriminalized in Belarus in 1994, but the country does not recognize same-sex marriage and authorities have cracked down on the movement’s pride parades.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has publicly mocked LGBTQI+ people by calling gay men “abnormal” and “absolute scum” during a speech to politicians last year.
Lukashenko is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s staunchest allies.
