Belarus has banned most of its citizens from leaving the country

Authorities in Belarus have imposed a temporary ban on their citizens from leaving the country. This includes those who have residence permits abroad. The decision comes against the backdrop of the scandal with the diverted plane of RainAir, which was forced to land in Minsk. On board was a journalist opposed to the Lukashenko regime who was detained.

The crisis in Belarus has been going on for months. Tensions in the country began after it became clear that Alexander Lukashenko won the presidential election with 80% support. The results of the vote are believed to have been manipulated in order for Lukashenko to consolidate his 26-year dictatorship. Since then, demonstrations in the country have been daily. Thousands took to the streets of Minsk, hundreds were detained and some died.

Many dissidents have left the country.

Apart from Belarusian citizens, the restrictions also apply to foreigners who want to enter the country. They will be subject to 10 days of isolation, the reason for which is COVID-19.
