Makei said there was no formal agreement at the time, just one that paved the way for the West to secure its rule, in part through the expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance.
“With its push for NATO enlargement, the West has essentially trampled on indivisible security, a vital principle, according to which one side should not try to achieve its own security at the expense of the other,” he said during a speech at the UN General Assembly, as quoted by Associated PressSunday (25/9/2022).
Makei said that NATO and the West are ignoring the legitimate security interests of Russia and Belarus in their efforts to expand eastward.
He described NATO’s involvement in what he called “illegal wars” in Yugoslavia, Iraq, Libya and Syria, as well as the Alliance’s efforts to invade some of the Eastern Slavic historians and adjacent lands.

“Therefore, it is the collective of the West that must take full responsibility for the ongoing bloodshed in Ukraine,” he said.
Makei’s arguments surprisingly mirror those advanced by Russia, a Belarusian ally. Russian President Vladimir Putin has described NATO’s expansion into Russia’s borders as a serious threat to his country’s security.
When he first sent troops to Ukraine on February 24, he cited the growing military ties between Kiev and the West as the main reason for his actions.
For Makei, the problem was the power-hungry West.
