Belarus at the UN proposed a way to resolve the crisis in Ukraine

The bloodshed in Ukraine can only be stopped through a negotiation process. This was announced today, January 20, in New York at an informal meeting of the United Nations Security Council on the “Arria formula” on the Ukrainian topic, said Deputy Permanent Representative of Belarus to the UN Pavel Evseenko.

“Today we have to state an unprecedented level of tension and mistrust, which entails further military escalation in the Eastern European region. The coup d’état in 2014, the provoking of an intrastate conflict in Ukraine for more than eight years, its violent incitement against Russia, as well as the uncontrolled pumping of weapons into the region created all the prerequisites for both countries to pose a de facto existential threat to each other,” – he said.

According to him, the Minsk agreements, Minsk-2, Security Council resolution 2202 became “a missed opportunity to resolve the situation in Ukraine, being actually ignored, including by individual countries – the so-called guarantors of these documents.”

“We would like to remind you once again: Belarus has made every effort to ensure contacts between the Russian and Ukrainian sides in order to seek a diplomatic solution to the conflict. As everyone is well aware, Belarus stood at the origins of the mentioned Minsk agreements and a set of measures for their implementation,” Evseenko emphasized.

The Belarusian diplomat also noted that “throughout the entire conflict, Belarus has done everything possible to organize negotiations between the two countries, ensuring that they are held during meetings both at the highest and high levels, including within the framework of the Trilateral Contact Group.”

“Western countries, instead of recognizing the contribution of our country to establishing peace in the region, cynically prefer to punish Belarus with even tougher sanctions. But it’s a dead end. Such a policy will not bring peace. We urge once again to be extremely responsible for understanding that false accusations and sanctions pressure will only lead to further escalation of the most difficult conflict in Europe. It is extremely important to have a complete perception of the situation in the region, not distorted by propaganda, including trying to hear the principled position of our country. We emphasize that only through the negotiation process can we put an end to bloodshed and achieve peace. Belarus has already done a lot and will continue to do everything possible to resolve the conflict,” Evseenko said.

Recall that Belarus does not take part in Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. Minsk has repeatedly called on Kyiv and the Western countries behind it to sit down at the negotiating table. At the same time, the authorities of the republic are ready to do everything that depends on them in order to organize the negotiation process if necessary.
