Belarus announces plans to provide electricity to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant

Ukrainian energy operator Ukrenergo criticized the plan, stressing that the best solution would be to stop the fire.

“All Russian and Belarusian media coverage of the Chernobyl NPP supply from Belarus is a provocation aimed at exacerbating the situation,” Ukrenergo said.

On February 24, Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine and seized a nuclear power plant, the largest nuclear accident in the world in 1986, killing hundreds of people and spreading radioactive contamination in western Europe.

A new temporary repository for radioactive waste was opened in Chernobyl in 2021, and experts believe that the power outage will not have an immediate critical safety impact.

However, the Ukrainian president’s chancellery has expressed concern that the Russian side could provoke provocation at the NPP.
