Yesterday evening, Thursday, a cyclist opened fire at a Beirut Guard patrol in Achrafieh that was stopping violating bikes, wounding one of the patrol members in the neck, which led to his death.

In the details, the aforementioned driver tried to pass the checkpoint set up by the patrol, whose members were known to be unarmed. The driver tried to flee, firing at the officers, fatally wounding one of them. While fleeing, he stopped another biker and shot him in the foot. He was of Egyptian nationality, and robbed him of the bike to flee with it. .

Lebanon Debate has learned that the security authorities have become aware of the identity of the perpetrator, who is of Syrian nationality, and are investigating him, and that an order for his arrest is very close.

Member of the Strong Republic, Representative Ghassan Hasbani, explained in an interview with “Lebanon Debate” that a number of Beirut’s first representatives will have a common position on what happened, in support of the work of the Beirut Municipal Guard, given that they cannot be called the Beirut Police, as they are armed or equipped, because the Beirut Police are affiliated with The Ministry of Interior and the Internal Security Forces.

He hinted at points that would be made by these representatives who had previously warned of the security chaos that could occur in the region, explaining that they would present practical steps, and there would also be a common position that goes beyond the separate positions of each representative.

He confirmed that this position will be announced at two in the afternoon during the press conference.

As for what was reached in the investigations, he confirmed that “the identity of the criminal has become known to the security forces, and he is of Syrian nationality,” and he said: “I am not sure whether he was arrested or not. He was armed and was riding an illegal bicycle, and he tried to cross the barrier that stops the illegal bicycles.” He praised the work of the Beirut Guard in this field.

And about the possibility of deputies demanding that the municipal guard be armed in light of this lack of security? He refused to answer the question, leaving the matter to the joint press conference with the rest of the representatives so that there would be a unified position on the demands.
