The three tournaments represent the top competitions on CONMEBOL’s calendar and are an excellent addition to beIN’s football portfolio, cementing our position as a home for all sports fans.”
Copa Libertadores
The 2023 edition of the Copa Libertadores, the tournament synonymous with the European Champions League in South America, kicked off this week with the participation of 47 clubs from 10 countries to compete for the continent’s most important titles. Argentine clubs have historically dominated the competition titles, which recorded their first start 63 years ago, as Atletico Independiente holds the record by winning seven titles, followed by Boca Juniors with six titles. However, Brazilian clubs have won the championship on five occasions over the past six years.
The winning team of the Copa Libertadores championship will achieve continental football glory, in addition to earning a cash prize of up to 28 million US dollars, in addition to the opportunity to participate in the Club World Cup. South American champions Flamengo arrived from Rio de Janeiro in Morocco earlier this month hoping to be the first team to win the Club World Cup from outside Europe since 2012; However, it suffered a historic defeat in the semi-finals against Al Hilal Saudi Arabia.
Cuba Sudamericana
The Copa Sudamericana, launched in 2002, is the second most important club competition in South America and sees the participation of 44 clubs from the 10 national football associations of CONMEBOL. And while certain clubs have not succeeded in dominating the championship title yet, the Ecuadorian club Independiente del Valle has become one of four clubs that have won the championship title twice, after defeating the Brazilian club Sao Paulo in Argentina last October.
Recopa black americana
For its part, the Recopa Sudamericana, the South American Super Cup, brings together the winners of the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana. The home and away matches this year bring together Flamengo and Independiente del Valle clubs, in a replay of the 2020 edition of the tournament, which was won by the Brazilians. The first leg kicks off on February 21 at the Banco de Guayaquil stadium in Quito, before the two teams play the second leg a week later at the Maracanã stadium in Rio on February 28.
