WASHINGTON – The officials China put on guard United States of America (USA) not to interfere in bilateral relations between New Delhi and Beijing. So reads the ‘China Military Strength Report (CMPR)’ presented by the Pentagon to the US Congress.

Recent US reports on China’s military strategy suggest that Beijing has been careful to manage its border standoff with Ladakh in an effort to keep the crisis from damaging other areas of its bilateral relationship with New Delhi.

The Ladakh border standoff was triggered after a series of clashes between the two armies at different locations along the Line of Effective Control (LAC) in 2020.

Separately, the Pentagon report mentioned a deadly clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley region in June 2021, the deadliest between the two countries in 46 years, which left four Chinese soldiers and 20 Indian soldiers dead.

“Throughout 2021, the Chinese military ‘maintained’ troop deployment and infrastructure construction along the LAC,” the report said. SputnikWednesday (30/11/2022).

Despite remarks in the Pentagon report, some progress has been made in resolving the Ladakh standoff this year, as New Delhi and Beijing agreed to disengage their troops from the latest Gogra-Hot Springs friction point during talks at the level of military commanders last September .

A complete easing of the situation in the eastern region of Ladakh has not yet been achieved; however, as more than 50,000 troops from the two armies are still engaged in a stalemate in the Daulat Beg Oldie sector, strategically located near the crossroads of the current (contested by New Delhi) borders of India, China and Pakistan.

China has consistently ranked between New Delhi’s two largest trading partners, a trend that has persisted despite the border standoff with Ladakh.
