A subway car collided and split apart in Beijing, China, leaving hundreds injured. Local authorities initially announced that about 30 people were injured, but the investigation revealed that the number was well over 500.

According to a report from China’s state-run CCTV on the 15th, the accident occurred at about 6:57 p.m. the previous day in the above-ground section between Xi’erqi Station and Life Science Academy Station on the Changping Line of the northern Beijing subway. At the time, the train ahead applied emergency braking as the track was slippery due to heavy snowfall, and another train following on the downhill section behind failed to stop in time, resulting in a collision.

Afterwards, the rear carriages of the preceding train were separated due to the impact of the collision. 515 people were injured in this accident and were taken to the hospital, of which 102 were confirmed to have suffered fractures. Currently, 67 people are receiving hospital treatment, and 25 people are still observing symptoms. There were no deaths.

Beijing city authorities announced immediately after the accident that about 30 people were injured, only reporting that the carriages had separated, without mentioning the collision. We are now forming an investigation team to determine the exact cause of the accident.

Xi’erqi Station, where the accident occurred, is one of the stations with the largest floating population in the Beijing subway network. There are more than 350,000 daily passengers, and 80,000 people flock at once during the morning and evening peak hours. It is reported that at the time of the accident, it was snowing and there were more users than usual, and it was during rush hour, so casualties were high.

Meanwhile, on-site videos filmed by passengers at the time are being shared on social media such as Weibo. The two carriages were separated as if they had been split in two, and the exterior walls of the train were dented here and there. There is also a scene where passengers escaping from a train are walking in the snow in a row. In addition, a text message sent by a passenger who was said to have been on the accident train to a friend, saying things like “There is someone else’s blood on your clothes” and “It is dark inside the train” was also revealed.
