Beijing has responded to sanctions imposed on the regime this week for alleged human rights violations against Muslim minorities in China.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs cited the residential school system in Canada as a historic example of rights violations by the countries behind the sanctions.

The Chinese authorities are reportedly arbitrarily detaining more than one million Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities to subject them to political re-education, forced labor and torture, among others.

During a briefing with media in China, the spokesperson said the government has also expressed its displeasure directly to diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union and Canada.
