The basic motorization of the Kodiaq model remains the fifteen-liter petrol. Under the hood of a seven-seater SUV, it may look funny, but it’s the only way to get it for less than 800,000.

The latest information in perex may surprise you at first. After all, though Kodiaq entered the Czech market five years ago, in the initial equipment, the basic motorization comfortably fit under CZK 680,000. Several important factors spoke in raising the price of the basic kodiaq. First of all, the fact that new cars are “just more expensive”. Due to new technologies, strict emission limits … in the case of the largest Škoda SUV, however, it is not just about that. As part of the facelift, Kodiaq lost the initial Active equipment, which was in the last place in terms of sales with some three percent. And keeping such a version alive just because of the attractive marketing “price from” wouldn’t make sense.

The role of the input equipment was thus taken over by the Ambition design, which will offer the customer significantly more – a random 17 “light alloy wheel, automatic dual-zone air conditioning, fully diode lighting technology or an eight-inch multimedia system screen. For CZK 799,900, you can get all this with a 1.5 TSI engine (110 kW) and a six-speed manual transmission. It’s actually the only way to work through the manual in rejuvenated kodiaq. And surprisingly, it is also available for higher Style and Sportline equipment. If we do not count a separate unit in the form of Kodiaq RS, you will not find the fifteen hundred only under the hood of the luxury version of Laurin & Klement. So we borrowed one during international rides to see if such the most affordable design makes sense.

Just right
The 1.5 TSI unit has a maximum power of 110 kW and 250 newton meters of torque from 1500 to 3500 rpm. The curb weight varies from 1600 to 1800 kg, depending on the equipment selected, so it is clear to you that any sporting performance from such a specification cannot be expected. The car can handle a hundred in 9.8 seconds (in the case of a seven-seater configuration it is a tenth more) and it can continue at 206 km / h.
Fifteen is equipped with active cylinder control technology (ACT, we already know from the previous fourteen), which automatically disconnects two cylinders at low load and tries to save some tenth of fuel. And if it weren’t for the inconspicuous indicator on the digital instrument panel, you won’t even notice the whole process. The standard is a connection with a six-speed manual transmission, on request (understand for an additional CZK 50,000) a seven-speed two-clutch is supplied. In both cases, you only get front-wheel drive.

And how does it all work in practice? The truth is that 1.5 TSI works just as a basis. It does not show any dynamic performances, but on the other hand it does not fail significantly. From the lowest speed, it is allowed to persuade, the best starts above 1500 rpm and continues to about three to four thousand. Here, too, it is true that in order for the car to move properly, you have to go to the higher floors of the tachometer, you will definitely not get it for free. During the rides, I also tried a couple of long French serpentines, where the 150-horsepower four-cylinder was already getting really busy. He was still accelerating relatively well in a straight line, but I traveled alone in the car with a minimum of luggage. I don’t know what a family of seven with a full suitcase would say about such a team.

The manual is a shame
On the contrary, the absence of a six-speed manual transmission in more powerful engines clearly freezes. The tuning of the direct shift remained unqualified. The tracks are relatively short, the backdrop is accurate, you can get used to the manual very quickly. And he doesn’t mind using a brisk pace at all, in which the shifting is still accurate and flawless. If I imagine a combination with the 2.0 TSI (140 kW) engine (where, by the way, colleagues complained about the great delay of the machine after depressing the accelerator pedal), it would be a real nut!
The highway liner was not forgotten either. At the prescribed one hundred and thirty, the engine spins 2,500 rpm and on a forty-kilometer route without significant hills, he said 6.5 liters of fuel. A colleague on the same road ventilated the same motorization with the automatic machine and at the same speed average reported a consumption of 6.9 l / 100 km. Even on the highway, the expression of the engine does not bother you in any way, even at the top RS I praised the quality soundproofing and overall comfort on long journeys, which surprisingly also applies to the basic engine.

Let’s go back for a moment to the winding roads below Mont Blanc. My specimen wore eighteen shoes and received an adaptive DCC chassis (for lower equipment for an additional CZK 25,000), a multi-element rear axle is standard for all versions. During such “everyday” driving, the car worked as expected. The light front willingly turned into corners and the front wheels did not have significant problems with the transfer of parameters to the road. But when I set a slightly faster pace, the car began to protest – understeer in corners and more often intervening stabilization system. In the end, this underlined my assumption that the basic 1.5 TSI (110 kW) motorization with a manual can make sense for many customers, but miracles cannot be expected from it.
Conclusion
But for many people interested, it will remain the only way to work on the rejuvenated Kodiaq. Although less than 800,000 is not enough, the more interesting 2.0 TSI (140 kW) is connected exclusively with the automatic machine, ATV, Style equipment and does not fit under a million. An alternative is the 2.0 TDI (110 kW) with automatic and front wheel, but the turbodiesel is in the initial equipment of the Ambition compared to the fifteen hundred CZK more expensive. Suddenly, the CZK 799,900 does not seem like such a problem… but Škoda has no reason to discount it. It relies on the trend set before the facelift, namely that whoever goes for the kodiaqa will reach for one of the top versions.
Under the hood of the Škoda Kodiaq RS, I like it more …
