Behind the Scenes: Meet the 250 Volunteers of VYV Festival 2021 in Dijon, Côte-d’Or

It’s D-Day for the VYV Festival which is settling in Dijon (Côte-d’Or) this Friday, June 9th. Until Sunday, 30,000 people are expected. We followed those who work in the shadows, the volunteers, whether they are dedicated to welcoming the public, cleaning or assembling equipment.

On stage, the spectators will have only for them. Angèle, Aya Nakamura, Roméo Elvis, Jain or even Phoenix. But behind the scenes, there are 250 volunteers working and getting active in organizing the VYV Festival. The unmissable musical event takes up residence in Dijon (Côte-d’Or) from this Friday, June 9 and will receive 31 artists at Combe à la Serpent until Sunday.

At the heart of the device, we met Corine. She is a volunteer for the third time within the event. She installs the “Terrain des mômes” which will be dedicated to the reception of children. A commitment that is not only linked to music.

“What I like is the sharing, the meetings, the atmosphere. Usually, I’m a medical secretary. So yes, it changes me. I’m outdoors, in a great setting! We meet a lot of people and We keep in touch. It’s very rewarding on a personal level.”she says.

In their normal life they are employees, employees, students, perform various functions. During the festival, they take part in welcoming the public, cleaning up and setting up and dismantling equipment. A real hive who works as a team and in connection with professionals. Because everything must be perfect for the event which welcomes 30,000 people.

“We have a very motivated team this year. In general, we always have motivated people! It’s cool, it’s a good atmosphere”confides Geof, technician in the assembly department, in the middle of installing the sunshade canisses. “It’s a bit ungrateful but they can enjoy the festival afterwards when others are doing missions”.

The very technical stuff is for technicians only. Otherwise, we share moments! Volunteers can see the assembly of this big machine that is the VYV.

Beside Geoff, Arthur applies. He has been there since last Tuesday, with two days off. This is the first time the 21-year-old has volunteered. “It was to get me out of my studies. I have my catch-ups soon. And I wanted to clear my mind in the sun. And then I like the VYV!”.

Jean-Marie is not his first. From the top of his 17 years of volunteering through multiple events, he acts as an old-timer. “It won’t be the last! I’m from Dijon, I came in 2021 and I came back this year. There is a very good atmosphere with the technicians, the volunteers and at the festival”.

This year, nearly 600 people applied to fill the 250 volunteer positions, essential to maintain the costs of the event. “They are of paramount importance because they are in a wide variety of positions throughout the festival. Without them, it’s impossible for it to work! They are a great help to us in maintaining this event”says Romane Blandin, volunteer coordinator.

For several editions, the VYV Festival has sought to take a social and solidarity turn. Thus, among all the volunteers, 10% are from diversitywhether they are refugees, far from the job market or disabled.

France 3 Bourgogne will be on hand to bring you the festival throughout the weekend.
