Why did Apple choose titanium?
Every time Apple releases a new iPhone, it gives users a new experience. For example, the notch on the iPhone X, the triple camera on the iPhone 11 Pro, the flat edge on the iPhone 12 Pro, and the dynamic island on the iPhone 14 Pro.
The iPhone 15 Pro is newly equipped with an action button and USB-C.
The most distinctive feature of the iPhone 15 Pro is that the frame has been changed from stainless steel to titanium. So, what changes occur when stainless steel is replaced with titanium?
The main attraction of titanium is that it is lightweight. In fact, the iPhone 15 Pro is approximately 8-9% lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro.
Additionally, titanium is less prone to fingerprints and scratches than stainless steel.
However, the difference that you can experience in actual use due to the use of titanium is not that big. “Apple Explained” points out that Apple’s biggest goal is to adopt titanium as an “appeal point.” In fact, Apple is heavily promoting the use of titanium in the iPhone 15 Pro.
Apple adopted a notch with the iPhone X and made major design changes with the iPhone 12, but no major changes were seen in models after the iPhone 12. On the other hand, selling “materials” is an approach that has not been seen in previous iPhones. The smartphone market is maturing, not just for Apple, and it is becoming difficult to differentiate from previous models and competitors.
In fact, according to an article in Windows Report, Samsung’s Galaxy S24, scheduled to be released in 2024, may also use titanium.
With the adoption of titanium by Apple and Samsung, which have great influence in the smartphone market, the adoption of titanium may become a trend in the smartphone market in the future.
