Behind Indonesia’s Abstention during the Voting on Russia’s Suspension at the UN Human Rights Council

Countries have voted for or against Russia suspended its membership of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UN Human Rights Council). Indonesia choose to abstain, neither support nor reject. There are arguments behind Indonesia’s stance.

Although finally the resolution suspending Russia’s membership of the UN Human Rights Council passed because the majority of countries supported it, Indonesia and 57 other countries chose to abstain. This voting was held by United Nations General Assembly last Thursday (7/4).

There were 93 countries in favor, 24 countries against, and 58 countries voted to abstain.

According to the UN’s official website, Russia, China, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, Syria, Vietnam, were among those who voted against.

Countries that voted to abstain include Indonesia, India, Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Qatar, Kuwait, Iraq, Pakistan, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Cambodia.

The vote marked the resumption of the UN special emergency session on the war in Ukraine, and was held following reports of abuses by Russian troops.
