Before the World Cup … Saint-Germain announces Messi’s injury

French Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain announced on Saturday the absence of Argentine star Lionel Messi from facing Lorient on Sunday due to an ankle ligament infection.

Messi, who has scored 12 goals and 14 assists for the French team in all competitions this season, played the entire Juventus match at the end of the Champions League group stage last Wednesday.

Paris Saint-Germain said in a statement: “Leo Messi will continue to receive treatment for ankle ligamentitis as a precautionary measure.” Group training will resume next week.

Goalkeeper Keylor Navas, defender Presenil Kimpembe and midfielder Fabian Ruiz are also out injured and are expected to return to training next week.

The team from the capital leads the French championship with 35 points in 13 games, five points clear of Lens, which is in second place.
