An imminent retirement from the national team? Not an issue for Cristiano Ronaldo. It “never occurred to him” that his time could be over, said Portugal’s superstar (39) at a press conference before the Nations League match against Croatia on Thursday (05.09.2024). Corresponding speculation after much criticism of him following his European Championship exit did not change that: “On the contrary: It motivated me even more to continue, to be honest.”
Without a goal from the five-time world footballer, Portugal would have been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the European Championship. “When the time comes, I will go. This will not be a difficult decision for me,” Ronaldo explained his thoughts on the future before the match in Lisbon.
The Portuguese’s record player and goalscorer, who has played for Saudi club Al-Nassr for almost two years, named his former teammate Pepe as a role model. The defender “went through the front door” when he announced his retirement at the beginning of August at the age of 41.
