‘Before I knew it I became a kind of free refuge’

When your home turns into a free shelter or full-time motherhood is no good, it’s time for a change.

Zeynep (36):Stay at home mom his is the hardest job I’ve ever had. I consciously chose it when my son was born six years ago. He is an only child, so it was important to me that he play with other children. Since kindergarten I have had babies almost every day. Well, I thought the situation would be the same with a brother or sister.

The fact that everything was allowed in my house and that everyone was always welcome spread quickly like wildfire. Before I knew it I became kind of free assilum, where it was sweet foray seven days a week. I could barely plan my plans.

Half and half

When I got sick six months ago and asked the parents of friends to take care of my son, I was told no more often than yes. Then I made up my mind: dating can be half the time with me, the other half the week elsewhere. It’s a relief. Often my son does not want to see other children at all. Then we look at one movie together or just fool around a bit next to each other. Reducing dates has brought peace to both of us.

Full time

Sandy (35): “I opted for full-time out of full conviction maternity, seven years ago. But I had postpartum depression, got pregnant again before it was over, and had an unhappy three years. Not just because of my mental state; even my suddenly quite small world was very disappointing for me. I loved my children, but I missed work. The place for myself and the intellectual challenge.

I’ve been working full-time for three years now, my kids go to daycare four days a week and I’m me again and happy.”
