‘Beetlejuice’ remains at the top of the box office

“Beetlejuice” remained at the top of the North American box office this weekend, earning an additional $26 million, according to estimates released Sunday.

The sequel to the 1988 horror comedy film beat out “Transformers: One,” which opened with $25 million. The Optimus Prime film, distributed by Paramount Pictures, features the voices of Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry and Scarlett Johansson.

Warner Bros.’ “Beetlejuice,” which starred Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder like the original, has earned more than $226 million domestically after a spectacular $110 million opening — the third-biggest of the year — and a second weekend of $51.6 million.

In third place was James McAvoy’s horror film “Speak No Evil,” with $5.9 million in its second week, for a total of $21.5 million.

Overall, the box office was in a quiet period that will likely end when “Joker: Folie à Deux” is released on October 4.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” finished fifth in its ninth weekend with $3.9 million more for a domestic total of $627 million. The only film to have made more this year was Pixar’s “Inside Out 2.”

“The Substance,” starring Demi Moore, grossed $3.1 million in limited release, finishing sixth.

“Am I Racist?”, the Daily Wire film in which conservative columnist Matt Walsh poses as a participant in a diversity and inclusion program, grossed $2.9 million, finishing in seventh place with a two-week total of $9 million.
