For red lantern Beerschot, the match against the penultimate OH Leuven was of enormous importance. The match did not go as the fans of Beerschot had hoped.
Although it eventually remained 0-0, the 1-0 for OHL was more in the air than a goal for Beerschot. Perhaps that played a part in the decision of some fans to hide their own goal in a smoke screen.
Around one o’clock, Beerschot goalkeeper Mike Vanhamel suddenly stood in a purple smoke screen. Referee Lambrechts briefly stopped the match to explain to the captains what would happen if it didn’t stop.
That was the signal for some Beerschot fans to throw even more smoke bombs on the field. Vanhamel asked his own fans to stop and cleaned up the smoke bombs himself.
