It is the second time in more than six months that the Westermoskee has had to deal with vandalism. Last December, a man smashed three windows with a stone, and police footage showed him making a Nazi salute.
“We are concerned about the increasing number of targeted actions against places of worship, especially mosques. A house of worship should at all times be optimally protected against this kind of destruction,” says mosque organization Milli Görüş Nederland, which asks for “a strong political and social counter voice”.
The Westermoskee opened its doors in 2016 at the Piri Reïsplein in Amsterdam-West. Synagogues in the Netherlands are often already extra secured, whether or not by the authorities or private organizations.
