Fifa eventually banning the sale of beer entirely World Cup 2022. The ban made Budweiser the tournament’s official sponsor.
Budweiser is one of the official sponsors of the 2022 World Cup. The US brewing company previously promised to sell its drinks at all eight stadiums at the World Cup.
But then FIFA reversed its decision, banning the sale of beer entirely. This cannot be separated from pressure from the Qatari government, because the consumption of alcohol there is illegal except with strict permits.
In his explanation of the decision to completely ban the sale of beer, FIFA President Gianni Infantino felt that this should not be exaggerated. Because in a number of countries such as France, Spain and Scotland there is also a ban on the sale of alcohol in stadiums.
“If you can’t drink beer for three hours in one day, you’ll survive, really. Maybe there’s a reason why in France, Spain, Scotland, alcohol is banned in stadiums,” he said.
“Maybe they’re smarter than us, after thinking maybe we need to implement it,” Infantino added.
This decision has led to a rather complicated situation, because FIFA itself has a partnership with the Budweiser beer company. They have a contract worth £65m for the 2022 World Cup, as well as another £95m contract for the 2026 World Cup.
No, The sun reports that Budweiser is now considering seeking compensation, namely compensation of around £40 million. But with Qatar’s rich backing, FIFA may not bother asking too much.
Budweiser itself can still sell its own non-alcoholic beers, namely Budzero. Budweiser was seen tweeting “Well that looks embarrassing” on Twitter shortly after FIFA banned the sale of beer, but then removed it almost immediately.
