REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Beeper Mini, which was previously discontinued by Apple Due to potential security risks, it is back in operation with some significant changes. The application dubbed “iMessage for Android” is back online, but with new restrictions in the registration process.
Initially, Beeper Mini allowed users to register with their phone number automatically. However, in a new move, the app asks users to sign in with their Apple ID.
Registration via phone number is currently temporarily suspended, with the company working on a solution to restore it. Meanwhile, users can only send or receive messages via electronic mail addresses (email) them.
Although it initially achieved high popularity with over 100K downloads in the first 48 hours, ranking Beeper Mini in the Play Store has declined after being shut down by Apple due to the use of fake credentials accessing iMessage, which was blocked by Apple. Beeper itself refutes Apple’s claims that their application poses a major risk to user security and privacy.
They state that their app improves security and privacy for Android and iPhone users. US Senator Elizabeth Warren supports it Beeper in this controversy by expressing concern about Apple’s blocking of the app. He highlighted the importance of ease and security in cross-platform message exchange.
Apple, in its statement, mentioned the risks posed by the techniques used by Beeper Mini. Apple emphasizes their commitment to protecting users. Although Apple agreed to adopt RCS (Rich Communication Standard) for iMessage, this effort did not completely end the problem between blue and green message bubbles.
Currently, Beeper Mini is free to use while the company continues to work to resolve the issue with Apple. Initially, the app has a monthly subscription fee, however, Beeper will continue the subscription once the dispute with Apple is resolved. The debate between Beeper and Apple does not appear to be over, with Apple committing to future security updates, hinting at the possibility of continued conflict between the two.
