Beds and drinking fountains made at the ‘San Antonio’ school

When the community of San Antonio Special Education College saw the effects of the last rains on homeless animals, the management of the center decided to embark on a project to collaborate with the protector and the cat colonies through different learning environments. The ‘By your side’ initiative allows students and staff of the school to provide a service to animals of Ceuta at the same time that the community is enriched, learns and “fosters the autonomy, empowerment and self-realization of the students.” It will take place between March and May.

The center has started its contribution with the CAS Controlled Colony and has launched an awareness campaign to encourage the reception and adoption of dogs and cats, but also a series of activities with students to ensure animal welfare. Among the tasks that they are carrying out is the construction of beds for cats with wood and cushions, water troughs with reused material or a laundry service for the small blankets of the cat colony.

Students take care of these tasks depending on the educational cycle. Thus, the little ones work on the subject by reading adapted stories and will paint the PVC pipes that will act as drinking fountains. In the medium cycle they will be in charge of making drinkers from 5-liter jugs of water and the beds with cardboard boxes. And the older ones will build them out of wood and make cushions, in addition to assembling toys for the environmental stimulation of the dogs and taking care of the laundry service. They will also be part of a video montage with images of them with their pets and music to “visualize how good and positive it is to have a pet at home.”

This Friday they will deliver to the colony the first batch of beds for cats and, the following week, to the protector a part of the money collected from the sale of poinsettias to buy medicines.

The center has also launched the campaign to promote shelter for dogs through social media and outreach groups for families. This means that the furry will spend some time until it finds its permanent home or while it receives veterinary treatment. Every day the school shares on its networks the images of the dogs and cats that are adopted or are looking for an adoption house.
