Bečva poisoning: Someone is afraid to talk, politicians say, and they have announced a reward of a hundred thousand

The reward is intended for one of the whistleblowers, who are specifically acquainted with the origin of the accident in Bečva, or work at the source of pollution. “It is very likely that potential Whistleblowers are afraid to speak,” Gazdík said.

Both politicians decided to take this step after Tuesday’s re-leakage of chemicals into Bečva, when they met directly at one of the outlets, from which white foam flowed into the river.

“I would like to urge a potential witness who has information about the perpetrator of this accident not to be afraid to contact the police authority, or to contact us in person or by e-mail – [email protected]. I believe that he could also be granted the status of a secret witness, if the conditions were met, “said Deputy Governor Ančincová.

“I feel it is my civic duty to take this step, which I believe will lead to the capture of the culprit. Unfortunately, I consider the possible punishment for the perpetrators to be a mockery, given the trigger that an unknown substance has left on tens of kilometers of watercourse. I call for the legislation governing the handling of chemicals to be vigorously applied in this case, ”explains Hana Ančincová.

According to both politicians, who are in opposition to each other at the regional level, the investigation of one of the biggest ecological disasters is taking a long time.

“At the same time, there are a number of doubts and unclear questions surrounding the case, to which the Minister of the Environment refuses to give answers to the public. Then it evokes legitimate feelings that he is trying to cover everything up. I do not like that the problems of the people and the landscape in the Zlín region are still indifferent to officials in Prague, so we politicians from the region must start acting and help the Czech Police find the culprit who is responsible for the catastrophe in Bečva, “said Petr Gazdík.

A catastrophic poisoning can be caused by a manual error

Some fishermen are spreading information about a manual error of one of the workers of the DEZA chemical plant, who had to turn another valve by mistake, which was supposed to take the waste into the sewer.

“There are some theories that this information depends on one person who knows what happened. We don’t want to get involved in the work of the police, but we want to say that if there is a person here who has the information, don’t be afraid to log in, “Ančincová told Práva.

The position of whistleblower is an important anti-corruption tool. “Whistleblower is a term for a person who, from inside an organization, beeps to alert them that something bad is going on. He sacrifices his career, his position, or the finances he could obtain from unfair operations, the ideal of ethical conduct. And for that he would get legal protection, “Karel Oliva, head of the Institute for the Czech Language, told Práva earlier.

An unknown perpetrator released cyanide into the Bečva River on September 20. The case is still being investigated by Vsetín criminal investigators. Cyanide damaged the entire aquatic habitat and conditions for all water-bound organisms on about 40 kilometers of the flow from Valašské Meziříčí to Přerov.

In September, fishermen pulled forty tons of dead and suffocating fish from the river. They all traveled to the rendering plant. According to the fishermen, another forty tons of dead fish were carried by the current further down the river.
