Becoming a vegetarian to save the climate?

Several voices in Europe are calling for the adoption of vegetarian, vegan diets or the reduction of meat consumption. A Dutch city has even decided to ban its advertising. And it is that the livestock sector is responsible for over 14% of greenhouse gas emissions. A program produced as part of the European Week for Sustainable Development 2022.

An unprecedented decision was made by the Dutch city of Harlem. Starting in 2024, this municipality of 160,000 inhabitants will ban the advertising of meat from factory farms. The reason for this decision is because local authorities want to stop advertising for products that accelerate global warming. And it is that livestock contributes 14.5% to human emissions of climate-altering greenhouse gases, a figure comparable to the emissions of the transport sector in the world, according to data from the United Nations.

Livestock basically generates two gases: methane and nitrous oxide. Methane, as a consequence of the fermentation that occurs in the digestion of ruminants and also as a consequence of the fermentation of animal manure. And nitrous oxide basically from the fertilization of crops to generate food for both animals and humans “, explains David Yáñez-Ruiz, veterinarian specializing in animal nutrition and researcher at the Superior Council for Scientific Research, CSIC (Spain) .

In a context of rising global temperatures, it seems urgent to work to reduce emissions by methane, a gas that heats 28 times more than CO2.
