Turkey is seeking to become an energy hub for the region, capitalizing on the advantages of its geographic location and well-developed natural gas infrastructure. Turkish officials and representatives of the energy sector are of the opinion that after the gas agreements signed with countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary and Romania, other countries may soon request to conclude such contracts with Turkey, Hurriyet Daily News writes. quoted by BTA.
Turkey offers the only safe and commercially viable route, especially for Western countries looking for an alternative to Russian natural gas, as well as for those with energy and gas resources. According to responsible Turkish representatives, the country represents a strong, although not the only, alternative through which Europe can reduce its dependence on Russian gas.
Geographically, Turkey is located on the most advantageous route between countries with energy resources and Europe, they point out, highlighting the well-developed infrastructure and LNG terminals that the country has recently put into operation as prerequisites for its attractiveness.
Turkey has the most advanced transmission and storage facilities in the region and is expected to soon increase its storage capacity to 10 billion cubic meters, Hurriyet Daily News said. It also has three floating storage and regasification units (FSRU).
All of this is important for countries looking for an alternative, the sources said.
According to the quoted officials, other countries, including the Republic of North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, are also likely to “knock on Turkey’s door for natural gas deals.”
However, industry insiders point out that for Turkey to become an energy trading hub, it needs to do more, such as creating an energy exchange and introducing regulations in line with international rules.
International gas trading companies are already preparing to open offices in the country and interest in Turkey is only growing, they said.
