Heart attacks include signs of coronary artery disease which is quite often experienced by sufferers. This is caused by the heart no longer getting enough oxygen into the bloodstream, so its function decreases.
Coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease, but it is very life-threatening for a person. Because the appearance of this disease indicates an accumulation of plaque (cholesterol and fat) in the arteries of the heart. The greater the buildup that occurs, the blood vessels become clogged and have the opportunity to trigger complications of other diseases, such as strokes and heart attacks.
“If the cause is disruption of blood flow due to blockage, we call it a heart attack that will ultimately lead to cardiac arrest,” said Dr. Titus Kurnia Hariadi, SpJP, FIHA, cardiologist at Primaya PGI Cikini Hospital when in met in Central Jakarta., Wednesday (2/11/2022).
Blockages in the coronary arteries can be triggered by various things, but the main causes are an improper lifestyle and smoking. Basically, an unhealthy lifestyle gives people what they don’t give. This habit also provides other causes of coronary heart disease, namely diabetes and hypertension.
Furthermore, this dangerous disease can be caused by risk factors that cannot be changed or known as traditional risk factors. Risk factors include a family history of heart disease, increasing age, and a male person.
Signs of coronary heart disease
Everyone can experience different signs of coronary heart disease. Due to its fairly common nature, people often ignore their condition, especially when exercising. Therefore, be aware of the following signs of coronary heart disease cited by the Mayo Clinic and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute:
1. Chest pain
Chest pain or angina occurs when a person experiences pain such as pressure or choking. Generally this condition occurs in the center or left of the chest with a fairly short duration.
It is not uncommon for people with angina to feel uncomfortable and must immediately stop their daily activities. Especially for women, the pain can be very acute and can radiate to the neck, arms or back.
2. Shortness of breath
Blockage in the heart muscle causes blockage of oxygen in the bloodstream. As a result, the heart cannot pump blood effectively throughout the body, especially the brain and lungs. Without prompt treatment, these health problems will result in cardiac arrest and death.
3. Fatigue
As a major component of the body, blood circulation must be maintained to ensure that the body’s metabolism remains optimal. However, blockage of the arteries in the coronary heart decreases the blood supply. Gradually, this causes a person to get tired and weak even if the physical activity is not intense.
4. Heart attack
Plaque filling blood vessels will trigger a heart attack. This condition often appears suddenly without any special warning or symptoms.
Additionally, a person suspected of having coronary artery disease may also exhibit other signs including:
- A cold sweat
- Make you dizzy
- Nausea or indigestion
- Neck pain
- Sleep disorders
The signs of coronary heart disease are getting worse if there is no preventive action as soon as possible. If a person has the risk factors that have been mentioned, get regular health checks to check for the progression of this disease.
The best prevention of coronary heart disease is to adopt a healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious and balanced foods. Also, do light exercises for at least 30 minutes every day.
