The HKDSE results will be released next month, and fresh graduates are starting to plan their way out. The Apprentice Jockey School under the Hong Kong Jockey Club Racing Talent Training Center will recruit a new batch of “racing apprentices” from now until July 29 to cultivate local horse racing talents. After graduating from the competition, trainee trainees have the opportunity to become trainee jockeys, riders, veterinary service technicians, and nail smiths.
Apprentice candidates for the competition must be at least 15 years old and have completed Secondary 3 or above. Riding experience is not required. There is no limit to the height of the trainees, and the reference weight is 105 pounds for apprentice jockeys and about 125 pounds for riders. According to the Jockey Club, those who are aggressive, dedicated and hardworking, and those who love sports are preferred.
The Apprentice Jockey School implements a dual-track education system. On the one hand, it imparts comprehensive knowledge to the apprentice jockeys, and at the same time arranges for them to receive on-the-job training and learning. After completing the relevant courses, trainees will obtain recognized qualifications equivalent to Level 1 to Level 3 assessed by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications. Trainees will also have the opportunity to be sent overseas for training to experience different cultures. Chen Nianci, senior manager of the Racing Talent Training Center and principal of the Apprentice Jockey School, said that according to the potential and interests of the trainees, they will lead them to develop in different directions and provide professional training.
