The director for a long time remembered the work on his debut horror film.
Starting the filming of “Carnival Night”, Eldar Ryazanov already had experience in cinema. On his behalf there were several documentaries and one work of art, however, in all projects he acted as co-director. This time the director was preparing to present his debut independent film to the audience.
But the shooting turned into Ryazanov’s worst nightmare. He was dissatisfied with the script, in which not a single character of the hero was written. Moreover, it seemed to Eldar that Lyudmila Gurchenko was not at all suitable for the main female role. Due to lack of skill, Ryazanov needed multiple shootings, which required color film, which was very valuable in those years. Due to the over-budget, the director was reportedly even fired.
Also, some operators did not take the young director seriously. At the art council, the film was blown to smithereens, allowing them to finish editing. But after the premiere, the hopeless film turned out to be an absolute success and brought profit to the film studio from the number of tickets sold. And for more than half a century, this film has been adored by the whole country.
