Because of the stadium escape: Ten Hag protects Ronaldo – football

After his criticism of Cristiano Ronaldo’s escape from the stadium, coach Erik ten Hag of Premier League club Manchester United publicly defended the superstar.

“Now I have to emphasize something,” said the Dutchman, adding: “There were a lot of players who left. But the focus is on Cristiano, that’s not right.”

Like other professionals, Ronaldo (37), who is willing to change, left the stadium early in Sunday’s friendly against Rayo Vallecano after being substituted in the second half. “That’s unacceptable. For everyone,” ten Hag (52) had criticized afterwards.

Some media had taken the action as an opportunity to speculate that Ronaldo might want to provoke his departure from Man United. But ten Hag wanted none of that ahead of the Red Devils’ league start on Sunday at Old Trafford against Brighton & Hove Albion. “I’ve said it before: we planned the season with him,” said the former successful Ajax Amsterdam coach: “We have a top striker and I’m very happy that he’s here, in the squad and we’re looking at the stick to the plan.”
