San Francisco del Rincon, Guanajuato.- The drought that occurred in recent years has motivated producers to seek to make modifications to their crops, in the municipality of Saint Francis of the Corner.
In accordance with Herminio Perezdelegate of the community of San Isidroseveral have preferred to plant lemon and cactus, instead of corn.
And based on their experience, he added, they have concluded that these crops would be more resistant to possible future droughts.
“We already have plans for the future: many people are opting for cactus, others for lemon. But there are people who will continue to fight for corn and beans,” he said.
The last two years have not been the best for the agricultural sector due to the lack of rain, which led to crop losses.
He said that the workers contacted suppliers who have cactus and lemon orchards to harvest this crop, which is also new for them.
He said that this year has been good for the agricultural sector because the rains have occurred more consecutively, in the state.
“Yes, it is something new, because the lemon has the ability to withstand drought, the same as the nopal. The nopal withstands drought and is used as fodder for cattle. The nopal seedling is bought, just like with the nopal, the seedling is bought. We are already looking for suppliers. There are some here near Doblado, and we are getting some from Michoacán.”
