If you want to use all the slopes in the cross-border Samnaun / Ischgl ski area, you have to be vaccinated or have recovered. Samnaun in Graubünden is responding to requirements from Austria. Federal President Guy Parmelin, meanwhile, expressed concern on Wednesday about the increase in the number of corona cases.
It is a first for Switzerland: the cross-border ski area Samnaun / Ischgl is the first in Switzerland to introduce the 2G certificate requirement.
The background to this is that in Austria the state prescribes the use of the 2G rule for ski resorts. The fact that the Grisons Samnaun is following is because the mountain railways in the Silvretta Ski Arena wanted to have uniform rules, said the Samnaun mountain railway director Mario Jenal. He confirmed reports from “Südostschweiz” and the news portal nau.ch.
Snow sports enthusiasts who have neither been vaccinated nor recovered can still ski in Samnaun. As an alternative, there is a ticket only for the Graubünden part of the ski area. However, a certificate is also required there. The 3G rule applies – an exception in Switzerland.
Federal Council is monitoring the situation
At the Federal Council meeting on Wednesday, the question of the certificate requirement in ski areas and the 2G rule were not an issue, according to Federal Council spokesman André Simonazzi. However, Federal President Guy Parmelin spoke to the media in Bern about the pandemic in general.
The increase in the number of cases worries him, said Parmelin. Developments in neighboring countries are also worrying. In terms of the number of intensive care beds, Switzerland is still well positioned compared to other countries, but the situation is being closely monitored by the Federal Council. The Federal President stated: “In those regions of Switzerland where the vaccination rates are high, the number of cases is also lower”.
When presenting the state government’s new tourism strategy, the head of the Department of Economic Affairs also made it clear that, in his opinion, the pandemic will change the economy in Switzerland in the long term. According to Parmelin, this strategy helps to maintain the competitiveness of Swiss tourism. However, it is not about trying to return to the situation as it was before Corona at any cost. Maintaining structure at any price is not the goal.

Long way to the vaccination goal
In Switzerland and Liechtenstein, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) were informed on Wednesday within 24 hours 4150 new coronavirus infections reported. At the same time, the BAG registered 14 new deaths and 55 hospital admissions. A week ago, the BAG had registered 2607 new infections. In addition, there were five new deaths and 57 new hospital admissions at the time.
On Tuesday, 71.7 percent of 18-64 year olds in Switzerland were fully vaccinated, as the BAG announced at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. 74.1 percent had received at least one vaccine dose. As of Sunday, 87.61 percent of people over 65 were also fully vaccinated.
In mid-October, the Federal Council announced that, according to the current state of knowledge, the vaccination rate – not including those who have already recovered – would have to be around 93 percent for those over 65 and 80 percent for those aged 18 to 65 in order for the applicable measures to be repealed could become.
