Because hands and heart can be transplanted, but legs and stomach cannot be transplanted: explains the immunologist

The arms are fine, but the legs are not.

At present, there is evidence of successful whole limb transplants – hands that have taken root quite well and also function relatively tolerably. But with the legs, due to their large size and other functional characteristics, everything is more difficult.

  • First, too large an area of the body will be alien and the immune system will try hard to repel the alien. It will have to be deleted very seriously.

  • Secondly, the transplant will only make sense if the legs are fully functional after engraftment.

To date, attempts have been made, but no successful experiments have been reported. A transplant of part of the legs – above the knee – by one of the surgeons in Spain, resulted in the rejection of both legs and the grafts had to be removed. Therefore, a whole limb (and even more both legs at the same time) in the pelvic area, it is unlikely that it will ever be possible to graft.

Many people live without both legs, having lost them due to serious illnesses or accidents, disasters. Few of these unfortunate people will decide on such bold experiments, which also cost a lot of money.
