Bebe Vio and the Paralympic athletes’ campaign for Paris 2024: “I won’t participate. I will compete”

“I will not participate in the Paris 2024 Paralympics. I will compete”. This is the slogan of a campaign, supported via social media by some of the world’s leading Paralympic athletes, launched by International Paralympic Committee (Ipc) to defeat linguistic prejudices.

The athletes who have joined

According to the IPC website, the Italian company has joined the campaign Amber Sabatini, Australian Curtis McGrath and Argentinian Gustavo Fernandez, but also Baby Saw and other blues, to remember that Paralympic athletes have often been praised simply for taking part in sport and not for their sporting ability or fierce will to win.

The language used by the media

The campaign was created to spark discussion about the language often used in the media to describe Paralympic athletes compared to athletes who compete without disabilities. “Paralympic athletes have often been described in the media as ‘participants’ rather than ‘competitors’,” she says. Craig SpenceIPC Communications Manager – In Paris, after years of training and dedication, 4,400 of the world’s best Paralympic athletes will go on to compete at the highest level. But language plays a huge role in how people are perceived, especially when it comes to people with disabilities and Paralympians. It’s important to use the right language, which is why we’ve launched this campaign.”
