The beaver is spreading in Hesse; the robust rodent has long found a home on the Main. Have beavers already reached Frankfurt am Main?
Frankfurt am Main/Darmstadt – The beaver has arrived in Hesse. The robust rodent has long found a home on the Main, but in the meantime the largest rodent in Europe has apparently also discovered the park at the Niederrad light and air bath in the Main metropolis of Frankfurt.

Corresponding reports of bite marks on trees have already been received, reported Dieter Sattler from the city’s parks department.
Sattler cannot yet confirm the beaver sighting, but he would not be surprised if an animal was hanging around on the river bank in Frankfurt. “There are beaver settlements in various areas on the Main,” said the expert.
As the Darmstadt regional council announced upon request, the beaver is spreading in many water bodies in Hesse. New deposits are discovered regularly.

It has settled primarily in southern Hesse; its occurrence is estimated at around 300 family groups with a total of around 1,000 animals. The Presidium cannot currently quantify how many of them live on the Main.

According to Sattler, the rodents feel comfortable in places where softwoods such as poplars or willows grow.
Beavers cut down these trees during the winter months to access the young shoots and bark. If bitten trees have to be removed or felled, the responsible authorities intervene.
This is intended to prevent shipping, for example, from being endangered by driftwood. Sattler recommends leaving the tree there for the time being so that the beaver can nibble on it. “Otherwise he’ll just cut down a new tree.”
Animal adoption stop! Animals should be protected from “horror trips” in the new year
The beaver is the largest European rodent; adults can weigh up to 35 kilograms. The beaver was considered extinct in Hesse for a long time.
In the 1980s, the rodents were successfully reintroduced to the Spessart, and beavers now live again in all major rivers in Hesse.
