Beautiful! The Northern Lights were so easy to see in the Netherlands

The northern lights could be seen in many places in the Netherlands on Thursday evening. Social media contains many images of the aurora borealis, which people have seen in Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel and Gelderland. There were clouds in the western part of the Netherlands. The geomagnetic phenomenon could also be seen there, but through the cloud fields.

Capturing the Northern Lights is not that easy, explains photographer Bart Maat in Goedemorgen Nederland on NPO 1. “If you really photograph the Northern Lights in the dark, it is advisable to use a tripod. Or place your camera somewhere with a long shutter speed, so that it doesn’t move and you can capture everything well. If you photograph it or see it through a lens, you can see the colors even more beautifully.”

Plasma Burst

The fact that the Northern Lights could be seen in the Netherlands was due to a strong plasma eruption on the sun. A cloud of electrically charged particles then heads towards Earth. In the atmosphere they collide with oxygen and nitrogen particles, releasing the energy that leads to the colors in the sky, usually green and pink.

The sun is currently very active and there are many solar storms. As a result, the Northern Lights have already been seen several times in our country this year.
