They are short of superlatives, people who stayed awake on Friday evening and night or set the alarm clock to capture the northern lights above the province. “What wealth,” says Angelique de Kraker. “It was magical,” says Leonie de Koning. They receive support from Chantal Merkx: “What a gift to see this from our backyard, really beautiful!”
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the current solar storm that caused the impressive Northern Lights is a level five. A level described as ‘extreme’. The storm is caused by solar flare emissions and can be seen much further south than in the regions where it is usually observed.
“Our neighborhood took on an enchanting glow.”
Many people took the chance to capture this phenomenon well. Including Kathinka Geerts from Eindhoven. “Staying awake late has its advantages,” she said from Woensel-Noord. Dilara Colakoglu Das from Oss calls it a privilege to capture the beautiful spectacle. “I was surprised and amazed by this rare phenomenon, which bathed our neighborhood in an enchanting glow.” She speaks of ‘magic hours’.
Stefan Vlemmix photographed the northern lights from his backyard in Sint-Oedenrode. “I knew it could be seen, but I hadn’t thought about it any further. Around midnight I was walking the dog when I saw the red glow. Then I knew immediately what it was. Then I took the camera home and grabbed a tripod and marveled at the spectacle in the sky. It was a little less visible with the naked eye, but it was still very impressive!”
“Suddenly it was there.”
Lisette Kaptein from Den Dungen decided to go outside at a quarter past twelve at night to see the weather phenomenon with her own eyes. “Then it was very easy to see the pink-red light with the naked eye. Really beautiful! Then I took my SLR camera and used a long shutter speed to take pictures. Wow, what a beautiful experience, straight from my own backyard!”
Leonie de Koning also enjoyed the northern lights in Veldhoven. “It started with a green cast in the air and suddenly it was there. Red/blue, purple rays and we could just see it with the naked eye. Very special!”
