Beaune Racism Shooting Trial: Two Perpetrators on Trial in Dijon

It was 5 years ago, on the night of July 29 to 30, 2018. Around 4 a.m., two men shot young people in the Saint-Jacques de Beaune district (Golden Coast). Seven young men aged 16 to 20 were affected. Around ten days later the shooters were arrested in Bouches-du-Rhône.

And, this Thursday, November 16, 2023, and until Friday, November 24, takes place the trial of these alleged perpetrators in front, there Dijon Assize Court.

A night of horror

That night of July 29 to 30, 2018, it was around 1 a.m. that a car passed a group of young people in the Saint-Jacques district and hit one of them. The tone rises quickly between the two occupants of the car and the young people present.

The occupants of the vehicle, Loïc and Jean-Philippe, then use of a tear gas bomb, and try to hit the young people. “From their looks, I saw that they had hatred against us. They said we were idiots, that we had nothing to do in this country and that they were going to come back calibrated,” explained one of the victims the day after the events.

They leave, but they return to the scene of the altercation three hours later with another vehicle and that’s when pellet shots target the group. With: seven injured, one of them, more seriously injured, was hit in the chest, intestine and eye. Loïc and Jean-Philippe then flee.

Two men known to the police

The two men are therefore arrested 10 days later, on August 8, 2018 in the south of France. They are immediately my in exam for “attempted murder aggravated by three circumstances including premeditation and the fact that the crime was committed because the victims belonged to a specific ethnic group, race or nation”.

Both Côte d’Oriens, they are aged 36 on the eve of the opening of their trial. The first. One has already been convicted multiple times for armed robberies or acts of violence. The other also has a long criminal record. In 2015, for example, he was convicted for taking out a sword during an argument over a parking space in Dijon.

According to France 3, the two accused will appear detained before the Assize Court. They find themselves both in detention at the Dijon remand center for acts committed in 2023: a hit-and-run for Loïc and acts of violence for Jean-Philippe.
