Message from Mr. Gérald DARMANIN, Minister of the Interior, on the occasion of National Firefighters Day on June 25, 2022

Officers, non-commissioned officers, corporals and sappers,

I have a deep-rooted conviction that the news reinforces every day: the conviction that the 251,000 firefighters in France are one of the most beautiful incarnations of our Republic which protects and rescues.

This national day is an opportunity to solemnly express the consideration and esteem that we owe you and that we have for you.

Each intervention, every seven seconds, is like your outstretched helping hand, a daily variation of this Fraternity which is at the heart of our Republic.

Your colors remind us of the value of a life saved, that of relief delivered, of property protected or nature preserved. You know this better than anyone because it is the noble mission you have chosen to accomplish by regularly confronting danger.

I have a thought for the memory of your comrades who died in operation or in service. I know how much their memory continues to live in your thoughts and nourishes your commitment. I also want to express my support for all our firefighters injured in intervention, as well as for loved ones and families who have suffered.

Firefighters, you are a landmark and a resource. For the French, your example is the daily reminder of the cardinal values of public service. The population knows they can count on you and the Covid crisis has shown it again.

Whenever we need you, you have known and you know how to respond.

Every day, I measure the crucial importance of your missions and your ability to mobilize and surpass yourself, each time you are called upon, including to deal with the unexpected and the exceptional. This has been the case again in recent weeks when you have had to face severe storm phenomena, an exceptionally early heat wave episode or even several outbreaks of major forest and vegetation fires, harbingers of a difficult season.

Firefighters are part of the Civil Security community, whose French model we are continuing to consolidate. I carried this fight with determination within the framework of the French presidency of the European Union and it was heard by the institutions and our partners.

The law of November 25, 2021 aimed at consolidating our civil protection model and promoting the volunteering of firefighters and professional firefighters has also devoted major elements to the modernization of your framework of action, in particular with regard to the faculty to provide care. The Government is working to ensure the publication as soon as possible of all the implementing decrees of this law, several of which have already been published.

Professional and volunteer, civilian and military firefighters: you bring to life a model that is a reference and your dedication and action are an inexhaustible source of pride as much as they oblige us.

All great projects, all great ambitions are served by great ideals. I don’t know of any greater than the one that strengthens our commitment: the Republic gives what is most beautiful: courage and altruism.

For that, I say thank you very much!
Long live the firefighters!
Long live the Republic !
Long live France !
