Beat China, Indonesia’s Manufacturing PMI Highest in Asia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita says purchasing managers index (SMEs) Indonesian manufacturing is still the highest in Asia. The reason is, Indonesia’s manufacturing PMI again broke a record to the level of 55.3 in May 2021.

Indonesia still has the highest PMI in Asia, including higher than China,” said Agus in a meeting with Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Wednesday (2/6).

He said China’s PMI was at level 52 in May 2021. Then, India’s PMI was 50.2, Japan, 53.2, Malaysia 51.3, Singapore 51.8, and Thailand 47.8.

According to him, Indonesia also recorded a record manufacturing PMI for the second month in a row. In April 2021, Indonesia’s manufacturing PMI was at the level of 54.6.

Previously, the Head of the Fiscal Policy Agency (BKF) of the Ministry of Finance, Febrio Nathan Kacaribu, said that the PMI had risen again, mainly due to an increase in new demand and production expenditure (output). In fact, the government believes that these two indicators will be even higher in the following months.

“Optimism that production will continue to strengthen looks increasingly solid domestically, driven by hopes of economic improvement due to the domestic COVID-19 pandemic situation,” said Febrio.

In addition, purchasing and employment also increased. Likewise with the purchase of raw and semi-finished materials and additional recruitment of workers to support production capacity.

However, the input cost indicator also increased. Because there are limited supplies due to weather constraints, restrictions due to COVID-19, and lack of raw materials. This in turn makes selling prices to consumers also increase in the last seven months.

Meanwhile, the global manufacturing PMI also rose to the range of 56 in the same period or the highest since April 2010. The increase was also driven by indicators of new demand, new export demand, and production.
