Beat Apple, Samsung Becomes the King of Mobile Phones in the World

The global mobile market seems to have started to recover. IDC report reveals 1.35 billion cell phone shipped throughout 2021, with Samsung as the king.

Overall, the number of phones shipped throughout 2021 increased compared to the previous year. But shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021 are still lower than the same period in the previous year.

“Supply chains and component scarcity are starting to have a significant impact on smartphone market as we enter the second half of this year, and this will continue until we enter 2022,” said Ryan Reith, Group VP of Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers at IDC. Cnet, Sunday (30/1/2022).

The top position is held by Samsung, which shipped 272 million units of mobile phones throughout 2021. This figure is equivalent to 20% of the total global market share.

In the second tier there is Apple with 235.7 million units, followed by Xiaomi with 191 million units. The fourth and fifth rankings are held by Oppo with 133.5 million and Vivo with 128.3 million respectively.

Counterpoint Research also issued a report whose figures are almost similar to the IDC report. In the first place there is Samsung which shipped 271 million units cell phone in 2021, followed by Apple with 237.9 million units.

Next there is Xiaomi with 190 million units, Oppo with 143.2 million units, and Vivo with 131.3 million units.

Although Apple is in second place, the iPhone manufacturer recorded the largest growth of 18% year on year. Apple’s performance is driven by the high demand for the iPhone 12.

According to Counterpoint data, this is the first time the market cell phone Global growth has been growing since 2017. In that year, mobile phone vendors shipped 1.56 billion units of mobile phones and that number continued to decline every year from 2018 to 2020.

“The global smartphone recovery in 2021 follows an epidemic-hit 2020 and subsequent pent-up demand,” said Harmeet Singh Walia, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research.

“Market recovery could be better if there is no shortage of components,” he concluded.
