Beast notes on man. Review of Gleb Panteleyev ‘s exhibition “Hormones” / Article / LSM.lv

The exhibition “Hormonia” by the sculptor Gleb Panteleev will be on view at the Art XO Gallery until November 16.

The main friend of the main character of the series “Grims” is a werewolf. Today, Portland is inhabited not only by humans, but also by various fairy-tale creatures, which take their form without being noticed by ordinary people. Makeup is a cop and a descendant of an ancient family. Makeup creatures see and know how to hunt. Then, already in the first series, the hero, drawn into the revelation of his talents, meets a werewolf and befriends. The werewolf is vegan and invests a lot of time to change its nature and adapt to the demands of the 21st century.

I remembered this example in connection with Gleb Panteleev’s latest exhibition “Hormones”. Upon entering the exhibition hall, you are immediately in front of two large sculptural images – a wolf and a wolf. The forms attract attention, covering the future exhibition of works of art.

The wolf stands nobly, his tail raised, howling. The train is getting ready to jump. This duo alone can be admired for a long time by getting to know the finely robust formation of the sculptures. They effectively remind of Latvia’s most popular carnivores and the beauty of their shape. Both beasts are strong, savage and fearful.

In the description of the exhibition, Panteleev talks about human animal nature and dependence on hormonal fluctuations. homo sapiens is a “predatory, selfish, aggressive and volatile herd animal”.

The artist does not provide answers, but calls for reflection on the importance of human vitality in the history of civilization.

Behind the wolves, the exhibition continues with a nuancedly figured Lenin wheelchair figurine, a two-headed, stately centaur, one of whom is Wagner, the other Mussorgsky, both in soldiers’ helmets.

In the second “XO” room there is a sculpture relieving the tension of the previous works, with glitters on the ice, through which light shining from the depths shines. Figurines as childhood soldiers, all according to the artist’s own gender and resemblance.

The work is gratifying and leads to a slower reflection, although, probably, with the contrast of a large ice cover and small people, it is meant to thematize dormant drives and lying rivers of the subconscious.

A painting-style sculpture is hung on the wall. Lenin’s face emerged from the milky surface and his cheap hand clenched – “Lenin in the Sea of Sperm” is a metaphor for “insemination, fertilization and restart of a stagnant civilization.”

Panteleev really doesn’t answer, and he exaggerates, like an “animal male”. It is clear that hormone storms do not justify human action. Man is a moral and intelligent animal who regularly makes decisions and choices.

Man is a free animal in his intelligent choices.

Aware of your strength, you can choose and connect words. They help to understand and shape oneself as a spiritual sculpture. Freedom, aggression / anger, will, drive, imagination, responsibility, duty are some of the words with which to create your initially vaguely dreamy animal being. Civilize, educate? Maybe it’s not so relevant anymore, because most people are first and foremost civilized and intelligent animals. And Panteleev knows that. That’s why his latest exhibition is so interesting.
