Every semester, the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) publishes the results of bear sightings in the Pyrenees. 2023 is no exception to the rule. Six months rich in images and video, shared by the organization on its website.
In the space of six months, these are 119 photos and videos which were collected by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB)using 29 automatic cameras dispersed in their residential areas.
In total, 536 clues of the presence of the bear were recorded between January and June 2023 (such as fingerprints, hair, excrement, etc.), on four departments (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Ariège).
Thus, a male bear was observed in February in the town of Sentein (Ariège). In March, other specimens were detected in the department (communes of Gourbit and Orlu). Signs of the bear’s presence were mapped by the OFB.

In a video compilation, these bears can be seen up close. We see adults but also “sub-adults” (adolescents), scratching trees, playing in the snow, or looking for food.

Good news for the species, the bears seem to be doing welland reproduce. five litters different have been identified in the French part of the Pyrenees. Among them, the 3 subadult bears of Sorita could be observed several times, but it is not known if they survived at present.
